Victor Seroff’s Sergei Prokofiev is much more than the biography of a composer. Its complexity is impossible to review, except in detail. The only way to appreciate the depth of that detail is to read the book. Personally, I still cannot fathom why the tragedy is specifically “Soviet”, nor indeed if the life in question was a tragedy at all. 
The article deals with the Yet everyone knew that behind that personality must lie deep feelings and deep humanity. For how else could Rachmaninoff have written music that millions love, or how played with such compelling beauty. It is only now, with the publication of Victor Seroff's biography that we can understand what lay behind the forbidding exterior.
